Diet Software Review

Our diet software review takes a look at the software packages available to help you design and monitor your own weight loss program...and we pick our favourites.

The reviews are listed at the bottom of this page.

If you've ever thought of buying some diet software to use on your PC, Mac or PDA, then you can't help but have been overwhelmed by the wide range of choices available.

Having used a number of packages in my day job and with clients, the functionality and features vary quite a bit as does the price!

Some of the latest diet software does pretty much everything except do the shopping and cook your meals and is well worth checking out.

What we've done is prepared a list of the features that you should look for on this page and then we've road tested and reviewed a few of the better software packages on the market at the moment.

We can't claim to have tried them all, but would suggest that it's unlikely that you'll need to look much further than our top five diet software review picks.

We'll post each diet software review as soon as it's completed and hopefully you'll find them useful in making your selection!

Diet Software Review - Why Should You Use Diet Software...?

Quite simply, a good software package can enable you to personalise your weight loss program.

It can take the guesswork out your diet or weight management efforts and provides a wealth of information, resources and powerful tools to maximise your chances of success.

A good diet software package will enable you to:

  • Monitor your progress - Your weight, body fat and fitness as well as a range of health indicators like blood pressure and cholesterol levels. Some also remind you when you've forgotten a meal or tell you when you've eaten too much

  • Nutritional intake - You can analyse everything you eat in terms of calories, fat, protein, carbs, vitamins and minerals. Most have comprehensive calorie counters and some even provide analyses of restaurant menus and popular fast food meals

  • Menus - You can design and store your own menus and recipes, plan your week's food intake and produce shopping lists

  • Follow your favourite diet - Several software packages have links with popular diets so you can still do the Zone, Weight Watchers or the Atkins if you want to

  • Exercise - Some software packages allow you to enter and monitor your exercise routines
  • So if you want to design your diet and exercise program, monitor your progress and make changes as go, a diet software package for your PC may be of considerable help.

If you currently subscribe to an online weight loss program like eDiets then much of what a decent diet software package can offer is included in your weekly or monthly subscription.

However, you pay a one-off fee when you purchase the software, which may work out cheaper in the long run.

Diet Software Review - What Features Do You Need...?

That's really up to you and depends on your goals, IT ability, lifestyle and so on.

Some diet software is very simple and easy to use, other software offers a much wider range of features but takes a while to master.

As a benchmark, these are the features that we've looked for in each diet software review and that we'd suggest you consider before making a purchase:

  • Tools - As a minimum it should be able to put together a plan for you based on any health issues you have, your likes and dislikes, lifestyle factors, etc. It should enable you to monitor your progress and should have a comprehensive database of different foods and their nutritional content. If you exercise, you'll need a tool to work out a plan for you and to monitor progress

  • Functionality - How easy is it to use? You'll be using it every day so it will need to be simple with a straightforward user interface. Data should be simple to enter and the feedback clear and understandable

  • Mobility - The ability to run the software on a PDA or other portable device like a mobile phone is useful if you're away from home a lot. It also comes in handy in restaurants, supermarkets and on vacation

  • Installation - The software should be easy to install, set up and run with clear online instructions and/or a manual for use. Downloads are quicker than ordering discs and mean that you can get started straight away. Also, is Mac an option?

  • Updates - The software provider should be constantly updating and improving their products with frequent and regular updates available to download. Downloads should be quick, easy, automatic and free

  • Customer support - The true test of any software package is how quickly you can get help when something goes wrong. I like to be able to talk to someone on the phone, but e-mail is an acceptable alternative as long as it gets answered promptly
  • Diet Software Review - Reviews and Recommendations

As we said, there's a huge range of diet software on the market and we've posted reviews of the best packages below.

These are our top picks but if anything better comes along, we'll add it to the list.

Each diet software review will give you a summary of the features, our verdict and recommendation.

There's also a link to the product website in each diet software review so you can check out more detailed product information if you need it.

In case you're wondering which of these is our favourite, we'd recommend Weight-by-Date - for the money it offers the best overall package, best functionality and is the most user friendly.

However, there's not much to choose between them so you may draw a different conclusion!
